How we came up with 32 valve performance heads for V-8’s

     Arao Engineering Inc. has been an operating company for over 20 years. In this time we have done many research and development projects. All of them invented and fully developed by us. Some of them marketed and manufactured.

     With backgrounds in both Aerospace Engineering and Business, we can offer the latest high technology and do it in a business fashion that customers will appreciate. 

     In the quest for more performance, and having gotten as much power as we could out of the straight two valve head.
We decided we needed to scrap what was out there and come up with something drastically new. The 2% incremental improvements with the two valves were not improving in our book. This by the way, in order of performance is next to the bottom. The order of this hierarchy is this. Lowest on the food chain is the flathead. Next up is the parallel two valve (which all V-8’ are). Next up is the Hemi (now we are getting there). And finally, the top performance head available is the four valve (today).    

     The 32-valve project first started out to be a 2-valve Hemi bolt on head. However, after some research and design we decided to go with the more modern four valves per cylinder layout, because of the increase in valve area over the Hemi, and the superior combustion chamber. Less prone to detonation with it’s centrally located spark plug and a squish band that comes from all corners towards the center. Making the fastest burn with the shortest flame travel of all combustion chamber designs.

     Next in the engineering decision making process was the type of valve train to use. Of course, at first we strongly considered a dual overhead cam design. Nevertheless, after more analysis, the overhead cams only have valve control advantages after 10,000 RPM. Not where V-8’s like to run, and not where 99.9% of our customers are going to run theirs. This coupled with the fact that after all the front of motor cam drives are manufactured and installed, and four special one off camshafts manufactured, with four different cams for every different profile that the customer would want. We would have a $25,000.00 dual overhead cam 4 valves per cylinder conversion on our hands. We did not think we would sell too many of these. Therefore, the final decision was to manufacture and market a four valve per cylinder bolt on head using all existing camshafts, lifters, intake manifolds, pistons, and aftermarket over the counter big tube headers. Creating a very powerful, marketable item, that fills the void of normally aspirated performance.
